A shining star

The ozone layer...

We often hear about it, but we don't necessarily understand its crucial role. The ozone protects us by blocking some of the rays emitted by the Sun.

In this way it blocks all the extremely dangerous rays: cosmic rays, gamma rays, X-rays and UVC rays. After being filtered by the ozone layer, here are the rays that reach us:

UVB
- These are the rays with the highest levels of energy and they are therefore the most dangerous since they reach the Earth's surface.
- They do not reach much further than the epidermis. Glass windows block them out.
- They cause sunburn as well as skin cancer and skin ageing.

UVA
- They carry less energy than UVB rays, but they penetrate deeper into the skin and are not blocked by window glass.
- They cause sun allergies and also play a role in the onset of skin cancer and skin ageing.

Rays of the visible spectrum
- These are captured by our eyes and enable us to see.
- The colors of the rainbow are found within.

Infrared rays
- These rays cause the sensation of heat.

Microwaves and radio waves
Microwaves and radio waves are a type of electromagnetic radiation. Microwaves have a range of applications, including communications, radar and cooking.

A shining star

Do you really know which rays reach your skin every day ?

BENEFITS OF THE SUN

They are wholesome and essential...

BENEFITS OF THE SUN

Hmmm... Bask in the sun

Take a break, feel the sun's warmth on your skin.

A delicious sensation that comes from the sun's caloric action.

BENEFITS OF THE SUN

Tan

Golden brown skin always prompts the same comments « Wow, you're glowing ! »…

This is melanogenesis.
Tanning is the skin's main natural defence mechanism against UV rays.

A tan appears two days after sun exposure and reaches its maximum intensity after three weeks of exposure.

BENEFITS OF THE SUN

Strengthen

An ally to maintain good health.

The Sun plays a vital role in bone calcification. The UVB rays it emits thus promote the synthesis of vitamin D, the main factor in bone growth.

Sun exposure for 10 to 15 minutes, 2 to 3 times a week, is enough to supply the body's vitamin D needs.

BENEFITS OF THE SUN

Revitalise

A real antidote for seasonal depression.
The Sun induces a positive effect on our mood and mental state.

Sun exposure enables a reduction in the synthesis of melatonin, the sleep hormone, and provides energy and vitality.

Risks of sun exposure

Heatstroke, sun burn and skin pigmentation...
These are caused by excessive, poorly managed exposure to the sun's rays.

Risks of sun exposure

« It's blazing hot! »
Too much time in the sun, and your body overheats.

Sunstroke is caused by a saturation of the body's thermoregulation ability. It causes body temperature to rise, sometimes exceeding 40°C.

It is triggered by infrared rays.
The symptoms of sunstroke are:
- redness,
- excessive perspiration,
- headache,
- widespread pain,
- dizziness,
- nausea and vomiting.

Risks of sun exposure

Some ingredients just don't go well together. It's the same with the sun! You can't mix everything with sun exposure.

Some photosensitive substances (perfumes, medicines, hormone treatments, etc.) increase the sensitivity of skin in the sun. This is called photosensitisation.

There are two types of reactions:
- The phototoxic reaction : this is the most common reaction and is caused by using a large quantity of photosensitising substances, such as perfume. It appears within minutes or hours of sun exposure and can be identified by red marks on the sun-exposed areas.
- Photoallergic reaction : this reaction is rarer and is caused by using a low quantity of photosensitising substance already recognised by the skin. It appears within 24 hours or more of sun exposure and can be identified by the eczema on the sun-exposed areas which can spread to the rest of the body.

Risks of sun exposure

Ageing is one of the effects of ths sun.

Photo-ageing in the skin, heliodermatitis, can appear on exposed areas.

There are 2 levels:
- In the epidermis : UVB rays cause the appearance of small unattractive brown marks called age spots.
- In the dermis : UVA rays cause the formation of deep wrinkles.

BEAUTY SPOTS (moles)

Moles aren't always what they seem... Appearances can be deceiving!

BEAUTY SPOTS (moles)

Self-examination

5 steps, in just a few minutes, alone or with help from someone close...

The doctor's advice
Examine your skin all over every month and have it examined by a doctor at least once a year.

How to examine your skin
1. Torso, back and sides in front of a mirror.
2. Forearms, outside and inside of the arms, palms of the hands.
3. Behind your legs, spaces between your toes, soles of your feet.
4. Behind the neck and the scalp, parting hair section by section, using a hand mirror.
5. Lower back and bottom.

BEAUTY SPOTS (moles)

Observe them closely

Benign mark or potential danger?
You should take note of any changes since this could be a sign of skin cancer.

When doing your self-examination, you can easily follow the ABCDE rule.

If you observe one of the following criteria:
- Asymmetry…
- Bumpy edges…
- Colour is uneven…
- Diameter larger than 6 mm…
- Evolution...

Speak to your doctor about it. Early diagnosis is essential.

- Asymmetry…
The mole must be round and symmetrical.
- Bumpy edges…
The edges should be smooth and geometrical.
- Colour…
There should only be one even color: light or dark brown.
- Diameter…
Its diameter must be smaller than 6 mm.
- Evolution...
A mole should not change. Consult a doctor if its appearance begins to change!

Skin cancers

Protecting your skin from the sun and warning you about risks is our priority. This is why Eau Thermale Avène is working in partnership with the European Skin Cancer Foundation to help raise awareness, educate people and prevent skin cancers.

Skin cancers

The most common

BASAL CELL CARCINOMA

What is it?
A cancer that develops on a very limited area of skin on the more frequently exposed body parts: face, neck, hands, etc.

Specifics
It is the most common (75% of skin cancers) but the least aggressive.
It occurs, in 95% of cases, after age 40.

Diagnosis and treatment
With early diagnosis and the right treatment, the patient has a high chance of recovery.

Skin cancers

More specific cancers

SQUAMOUS CELL OR EPIDERMOID CELL CARCINOMA

What is it?
A highly aggressive localised cancer with high metastatic potential. It represents15% of skin cancers. It occurs most often on precursory lesions such as actinic keratoses.

Specifics
It mainly affects:
- Subjects over the age of 60.
- People with professions that expose them to the sun (farmers, sailors, construction workers, etc.).

Diagnosis and treatment
In 2% to 10% of cases, it can spread to the internal organs and become life-threatening. With early diagnosis and the right treatment, there is a high cure rate.

Skin cancers

The most dangerous

MALIGNANT MELANOMA

What is it?
A malignant tumor of the pigmentation system appearing on either healthy skin or on a mole through degeneration. It accounts for 10% of skin cancers.

Specifics
It spreads relatively early to other organs via metastasis.

Diagnosis and treatment
Early diagnosis improves chances of recovery. Later on, the cancer will require more aggressive treatment to prevent the spread of cancerous cells in the body.

UV Index

A scale for evaluating the risk caused by UV radiation...

The UV index expresses the intensity of UV radiation when it reaches the Earth's surface.

The higher the UV index, the higher the risk of skin and eye damage.

This varies according to several factors:

- The Sun's position : the higher the position of the Sun in the sky, the more intense the radiation. This varies according to time of day. Intensity peaks between 11 am and 4 pm; this is called “solar noon”.
- Altitude : the higher we are, the more intense UV radiation becomes.
- Latitude : UV radiation intensifies the closer we get to the equator.
- Cloud cover : the denser the cloud cover, the more intense UV radiation becomes.
- Reflection : UV rays are reflected with more or less intensity depending on the surface involved, which emphasises how dangerous they are.
Grass : 3% of UV rays are reflected.
Water : 5% to 20%.
Sand: 15 %.
Snow : 70 %.
Ice : 90 %.
