EVERYTHING
YOU NEED TO KNOW
ABOUT THE SUN AND YOUR CHILD

BETTER EDUCATION FOR BETTER SUN PROTECTION.

Children are little explorers who are never afraid to rush into the next adventure. The smallest ray of sunshine is the only invitation they need to run outside to play.
But in their enthusiasm, they don't realise that the sun doesn't always play nice. It can even be dangerous.

Almost 30 years of expertise

For almost 30 years, Eau Thermale Avène has been committed to providing you the very best in Sun Care products to protect your sensitive skin.

Children have more fragile skin

WHY DO THEY REACT DIFFERENTLY TO THE SUN ?

- The upper epidermal layer in a child's skin is finer than that of an adult’s.

- Children are still growing. Their body isn't yet resistant to the sun's dangers.

- Their skin is very reactive to the products they use. Children need sun protection designed for their age and their sensitive skin.

Sun care that protects, so your kids can be kids

Anti-aggression
barrier texture

For our range of children's Sun Care products, we use technology that is adapted to their particularly sensitive skin.

Its texture makes application easier. It comes as an oil-in-water, easy to spread emulsion. On contact with the skin, the texture changes (water-in-oil emulsion) and transforms into an anti-aggression barrier. This reinforced, long-lasting and highly water-resistant protective film acts as a shield against external factors (UV, water, etc.)* at all times.

Stage 1: An oil-in-water emulsion that is fluid, pleasant and easy to apply.
Phase 2: On contact with the skin, the texture changes and becomes water-in-oil creating an anti-aggression, protective and lasting barrier.

BENEFITS OF THE SUN

The Sun definitely has benefits for your children!

BENEFITS OF THE SUN

Stronger bones

UVB rays promote vitamin D synthesis to strengthen your children's bones.

10 minutes is all they need.
If your children are exposed to the sun for about 10 minutes, two or three times a week, that's enough to supply their vitamin D needs.

BENEFITS OF THE SUN

Be in top form

No more sluggishness!
The Sun has a positive effect on their emotional state.

Sun exposure influences their sleep and mood. It gives them energy and vitality!

Risks of Sun exposure

The Sun isn't always on your child's side, it can cause serious harm if they are exposed to the rays for too long.

Risks of Sun exposure

Result is...
Heatstroke

« It's blazing hot! »
Too much time in the sun, and oops, their body overheats.

This is a case of sunstroke.
It causes a rise in body temperature, which can exceed 40°C. It is triggered by infrared rays.

What are the signs?
If your children complain of headaches and you observe redness...
It's probably sunstroke.
If the symptoms persist, consult a doctor.

Risks of Sun exposure

Result is...
Sunburn

Sunburn can happen quicker than most of us think...

Sunburn.
This is caused by UVB and UVA rays.
Its maximum intensity is between 12 and 24 hours and lasts for approximately 72 hours.

Sunburn is more than just red marks on the skin. Repeat occurrences can be dangerous. Don't underestimate them. Remain vigilant and follow our sun exposure advice.

Risks of Sun exposure

Long-term effects

Children hardly ever think about the future... And they certainly don't think decades ahead! So, it's up to the parents to be vigilant: a child exposed to the Sun without protection has a greater risk of developing sun damage as an adult. Remain vigilant and follow our sun exposure rules.

Our sun care products

A child's skin is younger and therefore more vulnerable. It requires extra special attention and protection.

Sun exposure rules

These rules are essential to enable your children to enjoy the sun without danger.

Sun exposure rules

Time of day
is important

« When can they go play in the sun? »
The higher the position of the sun in the sky, the more intense the UV rays.

This intensity reaches its peak around « solar noon », in other words, between 12 pm and 4 pm.
They should therefore not be exposed to the sun during this time of day.

Sun exposure rules

Clothing

« What should they wear to protect them from the sun? »

When out in the sun, children should protect:
- Their eyes with sunglasses.
- Their head with a wide-brimmed hat.
- Their shoulders with a T-shirt and a hat.

Sun exposure rules

Keep them
hydrated and
in the shade

In the sun, they get hot quickly and their throat begins to feel dry.

It is very important that children drink a lot of water during sun exposure to prevent dehydration. Opt for shady areas, under the trees or an umbrella.

Sun exposure rules

No
direct exposure

« Can they be exposed to the sun? »
Some children are more sensitive to heat and UV rays than others...

Babies and young children should never be exposed to direct sunlight.

Overexposure to the sun can cause serious harm to your health.

TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE

It’s time to focus on
the right habits

TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE

A vulnerable
target

At school during breaktime, at the park on weekends...Your children are very often exposed to the sun.

Their skin is still fragile and therefore more vulnerable to sun damage if it isn't protected correctly.

Children stay outside for an average of 10 hours per week when they're at school.

TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE

Make it
a habit.

Today's children are the adults of tomorrow. So it is important to teach them the right sun protection habits, from a very young age.

A better-informed child will adopt the right habits.

UV Index

A scale for evaluating the risk caused by UV radiation...

The UV index expresses the intensity of UV radiation when it reaches the Earth's surface.

The higher the UV index, the higher the risk of skin and eye damage.

This varies according to several factors:

- The Sun's position : the higher the position of the Sun in the sky, the more intense the radiation. This varies according to time of day. Intensity peaks between 11 am and 4 pm; this is called “solar noon”.
- Altitude : the higher we are, the more intense UV radiation becomes.
- Latitude : UV radiation intensifies the closer we get to the equator.
- Cloud cover : the denser the cloud cover, the more intense UV radiation becomes.
- Reflection : UV rays are reflected with more or less intensity depending on the surface involved, which emphasises how dangerous they are.
Grass : 3% of UV rays are reflected.
Water : 5% to 20%.
Sand: 15 %.
Snow : 70 %.
Ice : 90 %.
