EVERYTHING
YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT OCEANS

PRESERVE THE OCEANS, FOR OUR PRESENT AND OUR FUTURE.

The seven seas, the big blue...many expressions are used to talk about our oceans. They represent 2/3 of our planet.
The survival of many populations and species depend on them. But their beauty hides another reality: their future is under threat.

PROTECT YOUR SKIN, RESPECT THE OCEAN

Eau Thermale Avène is committed to providing the best sun protection
for your skin while minimising the environmental impact of our products.

No impact on coral, phytoplankton and zooplankton

To take the next step, we assessed the impact of our sun filters on marine biodiversity.

No impact on coral, phytoplankton and zooplankton

A first conclusive study

An initial study, conducted by an independent scientific observatory, the Oceanological Observatory in Banyuls-sur-Mer (partner of the European Marine Biological Resource Center), has demonstrated the safety of our sun filters on the coral Pocillopora damicornis. This species is particularly widespread and forms part of the Great Barrier Reef.

*Study conducted with concentrations representative of those found in the environment.

No impact on coral, phytoplankton or zooplankton

Remind me, what's plankton again?

Coral isn't the only link in the chain, which is why we are also interested in the impact of our sun filters on phytoplankton and zooplankton models that form the basis of the food chain.

Phytoplankton, dubbed "the green lungs of the planet", is the top producer of oxygen and the main biological pump for atmospheric carbon dioxide.

As for zooplankton, it is one of the primary consumers of organic matter.

Both are essential for maintaining the balance of life on land and in the oceans.

No impact on coral, phytoplankton or zooplankton

A second positive study

This unprecedented study* has shown that our sun filters also have no impact on either phytoplankton or zooplankton.

*Study conducted on 2 representative models of plankton with concentrations representative of those found in the environment.

Context and key figures

Oceans are home to the largest share of life, act as nature's source and regulate the essential elements for climatic balance.

Context and key figures

HOWEVER, TODAY OUR OCEANS ARE IN MORE DANGER THAN EVER:

1 - Global warming.
2 - Rise in water levels (+19 cm in the 20th century).
3 - Increasing acidification (reduction in water pH)
4 - Non-biodegradable pollution (hydrocarbons, plastics, radioactive waste).
5 - Depletion of oxygen
6 - Over-exploitation of resources

This damage has driven some species to extinction.

Context and key figures

Save
the corals

Corals play a central role in the marine ecosystem. They represent:
- A source of food and shelter for many plants, bacteria and fish.
- Protection of soils and coastlines from runoff and/or erosion.
- Less damage from hurricanes or tsunamis.

Corals are therefore a vital link in the survival of marine ecosystems.

Scattered throughout all the world's seas and found at various depths, corals can live for thousands of years.

PUR PROJET PARTNERSHIP

A project with a mission to regenerate marine ecosystems in Indonesia, with the help of local communities.

PUR PROJET PARTNERSHIP

Logo Pur Projet

Who are they?
A social enterprise that helps companies to restore the ecosystems they depend on.

Eau Thermale Avène supports the Pejarakan project located to the north-west of the island of Bali, in Indonesia.

Why this project?
The project in the village of Pejarakan makes it possible to:
Create and restore coral reefs by transplanting coral fragments and developing sustainable coral culture.
Replant mangroves, which complement coral growth, to promote biodiversity and limit erosion.
Clean up the environment by removing plastics and reducing pollution at the source through incentives for waste collection and treatment.

The result is a more sustainable system: respect for the oceans, of course, but also improving the health of local populations (which is threatened by the burning of plastic). By simultaneously developing ecotourism to generate the necessary income, local populations are empowered to manage ecosystems more sustainably.

PUR PROJET PARTNERSHIP

Coral reefs at risk

Over 3 decades, almost 30% of coral reefs have disappeared, at a rate of 1% per year.

Coral reefs are vital to marine biodiversity, supporting up to 4,000 species of fish, 700 species of coral and thousands of other plant and animal life forms.

Cleaning up plastic waste,
our initiatives

Community waste management is another initiative that complements coral restoration.

Too much plastic waste:
- pollutes the environment,
- damages the coral regeneration process (corals ingest microplastics and slowly starve to death),
- threatens the health of local communities. The burning of plastic waste releases toxic gases.

In 2019, Pur Projet and Eau Thermale Avène set up a pilot project, involving:

1. An education program to raise community awareness of the danger of plastic pollution and how to develop an effective recycling system.

2. A collection and recycling program:
- Cleaning up the local environment,
- Waste collection (for a fee),
- Installation of treatment infrastructure: composting organic waste and eliminating non-recyclable materials.

The pilot project :
6 jobs have been created,
- 6 beaches have already been cleared of all their plastic waste,
- 45 tons treated in 3 years.

UV Index

A scale for evaluating the risk caused by UV radiation...

The UV index expresses the intensity of UV radiation when it reaches the Earth's surface.

The higher the UV index, the higher the risk of skin and eye damage.

This varies according to several factors:

- The Sun's position : the higher the position of the Sun in the sky, the more intense the radiation. This varies according to time of day. Intensity peaks between 11 am and 4 pm; this is called “solar noon”.
- Altitude : the higher we are, the more intense UV radiation becomes.
- Latitude : UV radiation intensifies the closer we get to the equator.
- Cloud cover : the denser the cloud cover, the more intense UV radiation becomes.
- Reflection : UV rays are reflected with more or less intensity depending on the surface involved, which emphasises how dangerous they are.
Grass : 3% of UV rays are reflected.
Water : 5% to 20%.
Sand: 15 %.
Snow : 70 %.
Ice : 90 %.
