Beauty is ageless

As you get older, things change. How much had you achieved by the time you were 20? What about when you were 30? 40? Women’s age is a source of constant discussion, and as we age society pays less and less attention to us. Unless, of course, it’s to tell us we should be looking more like our younger selves. But why look like your younger self, before your achievements, before your experiences? It’s confidence that counts, not counting wrinkles!

55% of women with sensitive skin find that traditional ‘anti-ageing’ products are too harsh for their skin.* Many of the ingredients used in these products are simply unsuitable for skin that needs gentle care, which means that many women must choose between their skin’s comfort and their skin’s appearance. Yet, even if we disregard the pressures society puts on women as they age, as the skin gets older it develops its own set of specific needs. Dryness, puffiness, dark circles and papery texture are natural and normal aspects of the ageing process, but not things that women usually feel particularly happy about!

In fact, feeling confident in our skin has an enormous effect on how we feel about ourselves. We keep our bodies healthy as we age, to feel good, increase our energy levels and maintain our wellbeing – so why not do this for our skin as well? Instead of applying harsh products that promise to tighten and straighten our skin, we should look at products that will care for, nourish and protect the developing needs of our ageing skin. When we care for our bodies we reap the rewards, and when we care for our skin, kindly and gently, we will see great benefits as well.

So, what care does ageing skin actually need?
Loss of elasticity

The body produces hyaluronic acid as a type of “honey like” cushion that maintains an open, hydrated structure within the skin allowing the free movement of nutrients. Hyaluronic acid is produced when the body detects the presence of hyaluronic acid fragments (signalling that the acid has been used up). During the ageing process the production of hyaluronic acid slows down, which means that the number of hyaluronic acid fragments also slows down. The skin becomes less plump, less hydrated and less elastic. Avène Dermatological Laboratories have isolated the optimal size of the Hyaluronic Acid Fragments needed to penetrate the skin and maximise the body’s own hyaluronic acid production. This unique fragment size is exclusive to us can be found in our new PhysioLift Range for sensitive, ageing skin.

Dull, uneven complexion

Cell renewal slows down as one ages. Living a healthy, active lifestyle can help to reduce this within the rest of the body, but the skin acts as a barrier throughout our entire lifespan, against pollution, weather and UV rays. It needs extra help with cell turnover to keep it looking bright, smooth and healthy. For many, the solution is Retinol, a derivative of Vitamin A. However, 52% of women in the UK have sensitive skin,** and Retinol is often too harsh for these women to use. One solution to this is using a ‘broken down’ form of Retinol. When Retinol is absorbed, the skin breaks it down in several stages, first into Retinaldehyde, then Retinoic Acid which is stored by the skin until it needs it for cell renewal. Retinaldehyde is substantially gentler on the skin than Retinol, as well as being even more effective.*** By cleverly isolating a stable form that is suitable for use in cosmetic products, only Avène Dermatological Laboratories have been able to use it in place of Retinol, for gentler skincare products.

Loss of firmness

Collagen fibres are often referred to as the building blocks of the skin. These fibres give the skin its structure and strength, but when collagen production slows, one’s features begin to lose their definition and the skin loses its firmness. Putting collagen fibres on the skin does not affect the skin on the inside, so Avène Dermatological Laboratories have identified an active called Ascofilline™ which stimulates the production of collagen in both the dermis (inner layer of the skin) and the dermo-epidermal junction (the point at which the outer and inner layers meet). By working with both types of collagen fibres, Ascofilline™ has a comprehensive strengthening, firming effect on the skin.
