Skin Types

Sensitive skin can be a problem for any of the following skin types and an understanding of your skin type is important to help you choose the right Avène product for your skin.  We have defined below the four main skin types and some of the skin ailments that are common to all (for more information visit Skin concerns):

Dry skin

Dry skin has a low level of sebum (oil) and is unable to retain moisture.  It usually feels tight and uncomfortable after cleansing unless a suitable moisturiser is applied.  Chapping and cracking are signs of extremely dry skin.

Dryness is exacerbated by wind, extremes of temperature or air-conditioning, all of which cause the skin to flake, chap and feel tight.  Those who suffer from eczema will have dry skin and our Hydrotherapy Centre treats those suffering from eczema as well as other skin problems.

Oily skin

Oily skin is shiny, thick and dull coloured.  This blemish prone skin can have enlarged pores, pimples, blackheads and other skin blemishes.  In this type of skin, the sebaceous glands are overactive and produce more oil than is needed.  The causes of oily skin are numerous: hereditary, diet, hormone levels, pregnancy, unadapted cosmetics and stress.

Combination skin

Combination skin is a combination of both oily and dry skin.  There is a greasy area called the T-zone (nose, forehead and chin) and a dry area by the cheeks, mouth and the areas around the eyes.

Normal skin

Normal skin has an even tone and is soft, with a smooth texture.  There are no visible pores or blemishes and no greasy patches or flaky areas.

It is important to appreciate that a sensitive skin condition is not solely attributable to one of the skin types listed above.  This is why at our Research Centre, our product ranges have been developed to work in harmony with your skin type as well as the skin problem you are suffering from.
