Skin Rosacea
What is Rosacea?
Rosacea is one of those skin concerns that is a widespread yet poorly understood, chronic sensitive skin condition that mainly affects the face. It is a condition that most commonly affects fair skinned people from northern Europe and has been sometimes referred to as ‘the Curse of the Celts’. Most experts applying their skin expertise believe that between 2 to 5% of the population is affected by the condition. There is no cure for rosacea but a range of sensitive skin treatments are available that can help to control the symptoms of the condition. Rosacea affects twice as many women than men (although it tends to be more serious in men). The symptoms usually begin between 30-50.
What are the symptoms?
Stage 1: Flushing
Usually the first sign of rosacea.
Can last up to five minutes
Can spread to the neck and chest and may be linked with an unpleasant feeling of heat.
Stage 2: Persistent redness & broken veins
Flushing is sometimes followed by episodes of persistent facial redness, accompanied by broken veins (telangiectasias) that can become inflamed
Stage 3: Spots, papules, and pustules
Small spots, papules and pustules may develop on the face that are similar to teenage acne. Unlike the skin blemishes associated with acne, the sensitive skin should remain free of blackheads or whiteheads
Stage 4: Thickened skin and Rhynophyma
In the most serious and developed cases of rosacea, the sensitive skin can thicken and form excess tissue, usually around the nose, due to enlargement of sebaceous glands.
Rhinophyma is more common in men than women, but it should be stressed that it is a rare symptom of rosacea.
